Houck Family Scholarship
At every LakeCities Ballet Theatre production, LBT uses local area high school students as part of the technical crew. By including these young people working side by side with professional Lighting Designers and Art Directors, students gain an experience that greatly enhances their daily learning of the theatre and the experience will benefit them if they choose to continue working in the theatre arts. Over the years, relations have been built and bonds formed as the young students developed into actual members of the LBT family. Many of the high school students we have mentored have requested letters of recommendation for college applications or have returned to work with LBT even after graduation.
In our 2007-2008 season, LBT instituted a LakeCities Ballet Theatre Student Scholars for deserving high school/college students who have worked with LBT and have displayed a commitment, work ethic, and attitude that is expected from all members of the company. In 2013, LBT changed the name to The Houck Family Scholarship in honor of one of LBT’s treasured volunteers, Mike Houck, who passed away in 2011. Our first scholarship recipient was Jacob Birch, a senior at Lake Dallas High School in Corinth, TX. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Melissa Shamp, Jacob not only exhibited all of the attributes that LBT regards to highly, but also impressed the LBT Artistic and Production Staff. Over three years LBT Artistic and Production Staff worked with Jacob, both onstage and behind the scenes and LBT felt he was deserving of the inaugural LakeCites Ballet Theatre Student Scholarship, assisting him as he began his Theatre Arts degree.
The Houck Family Scholarship continues LBT’s community enrichment vision by partnering with area high schools and colleges and offering aspiring theatrical arts students a chance to work in a professional environment.
