High School Drama Departments and LakeCities Ballet Theatre
At each and every LakeCities Ballet Theatre production, LBT uses local area high school students as part of the technical crew. By including these young people working side by side with professional lighting directors and art directors, these students gain an experience that greatly enhances their daily learning of the theater and the experience will benefit them if they choose to continue working in the theater arts. Over the years, relations have been built and bonds formed as the young students develop into actual members of the LBT family. Many of the high school students we have mentored have requested letter of recommendations for college applications or have returned to work with LBT even after graduation.
In our 2007-2008 season, LBT instituted the LakeCities Ballet Theatre Student Scholarship for deserving high school students who have worked with LBT and have displayed a commitment, a work ethic and an attitude that is also expected from all members of the LBT company.
Our first recipient of this award was Jacob Birch a senior at Lake Dallas High School in Corinth Texas. Under the tutelage of his instructor Mrs. Melissa Shamp, Jacob not only exhibited all the attributes that LBT places so highly, but also so impressed the LBT Artistic Staff and Production Staff over the three years we worked with him, that we were proud to present him with this first LakeCities Ballet Theatre Student Scholarship to assist him as he begins his degree in Theater Arts.
LBT has partnered with area high school drama departments as we begin to bring these young thespians into our full length productions. After an audition process and commitment of their time, bringing these talented, young, non-dancing actors into our performances gives them the opportunity to not only work with professionals, but also gives them a taste of portraying a character or emoting an emotion without speaking. Planting that seed will inevitably help them in the future with their acting skills. Watch closely during our productions and see if you can pick out these talented actors.
